A flu vaccine you get once, not once a year? A new company in Cincinnati's working on one

Blue Water Vaccines, a Greater Cincinnati startup, has received $7 million in financing to commercialize a single vaccine that could offer protection against all types of flu.
The seed round was led by CincyTech, the Uptown venture capital enterprise that provides funding and entrepreneurial support to help transform innovation into digital and health-focused companies.
The round was oversubscribed, so private investors affiliated with CincyTech also participated.

Cincinnati startup lands $7M in financing to develop universal flu vaccine

Another flu season approaches in North America, and Americans are getting the nudge for a flu shot, crossing their fingers for a good match against the virus. But a new local company believes it will soon produce a better weapon against flu – a universal vaccine that will last a lifetime. “Our goal is to change the world,” said Joseph Hernandez, chief executive officer of Blue Water Vaccines. Human testing on the company’s universal vaccine is planned within 18 to 24 months, he said, "then we’ll know if we truly have the revolution on our hands.” If the vision comes to pass, the cool-weather ritual of the annual flu shot will end, Hernandez said, perhaps as soon as five years from now. Researchers have found an approach that can lead to a novel type of universal flu vaccine, according to a study released on Friday by the University of Oxford. A team from the University, based on mathematical models, theorized that parts of the virus targeted by the immune system are, in fact, limited in variability and act as constraints on the evolution of the virus.
The results of these studies can be exploited to create a novel type of universal or broadly protective influenza vaccine, which once administered would provide lifelong protection against influenza.
